...a memorial.
Our good friend Sean Michael Sullivan, man-about-town and sunshine spirit, creator of Ben the Canary (www.benthecanary.com) and other amazing spectacles, was taken from this earth by a couple of really beautiful angels on August 20th 2005, while playing with friends on the Kern River in Kern County, California.
Before he left us, we wrote a song for him. You may have heard it if you were at the last Derby show. It's called "The Sun is Shining in My Eyes" and it goes:
I can't tell left from right
I can't find the same place twice
I don't hear what they say
But I know it doesn't matter anyway
Because the Sun is Shining in My Eyes...
I don't know what's in front of me
I open up my eyes but all that I can see
Everything is light
And anything that happens, baby, it's alright
Because the Sun is Shining in My Eyes...
Sean will be greatly missed, many more songs shall surely be inspired by his smile and singular gait, and The Evangenitals have decided to release an EP of all of the songs we were writing for Sean's Ben the Canary project, that we had the honor of playing for him before he was sublimated into 100% pure golden soul.
Thank you, Sean.

I have thought of Sean in the past, but tonite I was overwhelmed by wanting to "find" him. So I googled "Ben the Canary" and to my surprise and shock, found this blog website about his life. I had no idea until now, 9-4-06, that he had passed. I'm truly saddened, but more than that, still amazed by Sean Sullivan.
We met online of all places, and he came to New Mexico for a close-up, to romp on his old stomping ground, to shake hands with the mayor, and as he put it, to be the grand marshall in his homecoming parade.
Do you ever wonder why people are placed in your life? Every person we meet is for a reason. Romantic reasons aside, Sean is a lifeforce. He gave the gift of creativity in many forms, prose, homemade wooden bracelets, Nick Drake songs, 4th grade folders. He was the real deal.
I had my daughter on his birthday, March 25th, just a few months ago. I had been wanting to tell him that. One of the last emails we exchanged, I told him I had found the love of my life and that we were expecting. I thanked him. I asked him if he had found "her" yet....I said, "you'll know within the first 10 minutes...don't let her go". I never heard back.
A great man is smiling with his infectious angular grin. As I read all of his loved ones blogs, and saw the pictures, and read about his memorial, I am amazed. How fortunate for all of us to have him touch our lives in some way. Of course he would insist it's the other way around. But we all know better.
I light a candle in New Mexico tonite my friend. The air is crisp and you can smell the sage from the recent rain. And I see a star shining in a sky full of clouds...
